  1. My opinion of the book “Castle of Shadows” is that it was a very exciting book that made you want to read more. I thought that the book built up suspense well because it did not reveal all the information at once and kept you guessing what would happen next. I found that this lead up to a climax where there was a life or death situation and you would have to give yourself up in order to save your loved ones, and all secrets were then revealed and I liked this way of ending. I liked how you could never tell who was good and who had bad intentions because for example the character Alistair Windlass is at first a miracle to the main character, Charlie, and she thinks that he was her mother’s (who has disappeared) friend but then she discovers that he was probably the reason her mother left in the first place but you could not help wondering if he would turn out good in the end. Also, I thought that the plot was quite dramatic as you did not know what would happen next and who would be on whose side as there was a lot of fighting. The author also creates suspense by leaving the end of a chapter with an interesting sentence and starting the new chapter with an exciting scene.
However, I found it quite confusing at the beginning because I thought the author did not tell you enough and the story starts with the Princess, Charlie being left to sleep in the cellar and just eating bread and water and I felt that it was not until the middle of the story that the author makes it clear why Charlie’s life is like this and so I felt this made the story complicated and hard to understand. I thought the story had an intriguing and complex plot and overall was very dramatic and full of suspense.

I enjoyed this book quite a lot! It is my usual type of reading genre and I am sure others would enjoy it as much as I have. The cover was well designed and definitely attracted my attention. The author introduces the story well – the prologue was intriguing and the plot was excellent. I enjoyed how the author built up tension, meaning I almost literally couldn’t put the book down. A little more description could have been used to construct a better image of the scenes in the reader’s mind; however, I thought this book was well-written and I await the sequel with much anticipation!

This book is a novel of heart stopping adventure. A tale of thrill and spook. It has a lot of political interference which makes it confusing as the respective parties all aim for a different goal, not making it clear where their loyalties lie. This just adds to the suspense. All throughout the book there are shocking revelations adding twists and turns to the story. It is a story of bravery, courage, treachery and love (the family type)!
Since this is set in the past some of the language is hard to understand. Once you have got in to it you will not be able to put it down. This book shows you the life of a princess is not at all what it appears.

I would recommend this book to any reader who likes a book full of adventure and suspense.
    5 stars- an excellent book.

  2. Brilliant book full of unexpected twists. Starts at a slow walk and then picks up the pace. It could have had a stronger end.

  3. ‘Castle Of Shadows’ is a great book. I found it hard to put down. You never know what to expect, or what will happen on the next page. The characters are wonderful and Ellen really captures each one and makes them stand out and have an individual personality. I felt like I was in the book as I read and could really relate to Charlie. I could imagine just how hard it was and just how much she wanted to find her mother. I loved the ending as it gives you a lot of scope for imagination. In the 30th chapter I cried, you can really feel the emotion of the characters. I would definitely read the second book ‘City Of Thieves’.
I would rate this book: *****
So Far I would rank this book: 1st Place
I think this book might win the award: Yes, because I think lots of people of my age will enjoy it.

Castle of Shadows is an amazing book. The author cleverly makes you hold on to every page, till you are practically devastated that you have finished it. My favourite character was Tobias, as I liked how he always cared for Charlie, even though sometimes she was horrid to him. I thought the book was really funny, when Charlie was giving her opinion of corsets and even though it made me cry at some places, I would definitely recommend to anybody who has a good taste in books. I can’t wait to read the next one(s). Libby

  4. The queen has been missing for three years with no lead of where she is until her daughter finds out a secret to where she might be. Castle of Shadows is a brilliant book; there is loads of suspense and action – I loved every page of it. The characters; Charlie (Charlotte the queen’s daughter) and Toby (Tobias her friend) are amazing and the plot is very imaginative and fun. I recommend this book to anyone – it’s a brilliant book and I think anybody would love this tale of cockney language and treason! Mystery and adventure await.
I rate this brilliant book ***** By Alice

Castle of Shadows was an amazing book that was very hard to put down. It was a little slow to start but picked up very quickly. It was inspiring and interesting read, though it had a complicated plot.
I would suggest it too people who are into politics and aged 8-14. By Celia

This is an exciting, surprising book that makes you feel part of the story. It was a little slow to start with but it soon picked up. It was not a particularly humorous book but it was still very enjoyable to read.
As soon as you start reading ‘Castle of Shadows’, you fall in love with Charlie. The way in which she is described really adds to her personality: daring, determined and lovable! At the same time, the description does not go on for too long, so you do not feel bored.
I LOVED this book, although it was rather confusing and political! I especially liked the ending: it was amazing how it was sad and happy at the same time! I can’t wait to read the sequel, ‘City of Thieves’.

  5. I thought “oh no, I’m not going to like this book” at the start when I first saw the title, but then when I read the blurb I thought “well I will just read it” and I really enjoyed it. x

  6. Initially I did not enjoy reading Castle of Shadows. It didn’t have much action at the start of the book and was just a description of Charlie, the missing queen’s daughter, living her life at the castle. The plot was confusing around the middle because it was hard to tell if the Prime Minister was on Charlie’s side or not. However the end of the book was much more exciting and I found myself wanting to keep on reading to find out whether Charlie escaped the Prime Minister’s clutches and found her mother. I would give this book 2 out of 5.

  7. Castle of Shadows was my favourite book from the shortlist and athough it was a little slow at the start it gained excitement and my interest. I think that it had a strong plot and although at times it was confusing it recovered from that and became an enjoyable and engaging book. In fact I loved it so much I am going to read the rest of the series.
